Contemporary Art Museum
Bucharest 2010
The lack of a contemporary art museum in Bucharest at the time has been a topic of concern for many artists in the city. Currently, the only existing museum is located inside the "People's House," a symbol of destruction and urban reconstruction during the communist period. This association has led many contemporary artists to reject the idea of displaying their art in this building, as they feel it does not appropriately represent their work.
Many young artists residing and working in Bucharest do not view the MNAC (The National Museum of Contemporary Art) as a significant venue to showcase their creations. They associate the museum with the symbol of oppression from the old regime and the corruption and opulence of the new political leadership, as it is located within the People's House, now the Parliament of Romania.
To address this issue, a new site has been chosen near the University of Art, located in the old part of the city that remained largely unaffected by Nicolae Ceausescu's urban reconstruction plans. The aim is to create a space where art can be exhibited similarly to a window shop. This concept is a direct response to the excessive advertising and commercialization of public spaces in Bucharest. Advertising often covers everything, including the art created by contemporary artists throughout the city.
By establishing a new contemporary art museum near the University of Art and departing from the association with the People's House, this project provides a platform for young artists to showcase their work. It also serves as a counterforce against the dominance of commercialization in public spaces. With the opportunity to exhibit their art in a more accessible and artistically engaging manner, the hope is that these artists will find a stronger sense of belonging and recognition within the vibrant artistic community of Bucharest.
In close proximity to the National University of Arts, there was an abandoned garden area that was planned to be transformed into a megamall, covering the entire site. However, instead of pursuing this commercial venture, the decision was made to construct a new, smaller contemporary art museum dedicated to young artists. The intention behind this alternative project is to combat the growing economic power that floods the city with contemporary art, often replacing traditional advertising. By allowing the public to "window shop" art in this museum, the architecture itself creates an immersive experience with its abrupt cuts and design.
